USE OF NET SCORES FOR ADMISSION TO PhD PROGRAMS

University Grants Commission has set new guidelines for admission to PhD programs. The UGC has done away with admission by separate entrance examinations being conducted by different universities for PhD programs. It has announces that admission to PhD programs will be made on the basis of NET scores achieved by the candidates from the academic session 2024-2025. The results of NET will be declared in percentile with marks obtained by the candidate for use in admission to PhD programs. The was conducted previously in two categories: One for JRF and second for Assistant Professor. Now UGC has introduced a third category for NET examination.

Now , if a candidate has qualified first category i.e., JRF , he/she will be eligible for all the three categories i.e., JRF, assistant professor and PhD program. The one who has qualified second category i.e., assistant professor, he /she will be eligible for assistant professor as well as for PhD admission. If a candidate has qualified third category, he/she will be eligible for PhD admission only. For all the three categories score cards will be given separately.

It is to be reminded that NET examination is conducted two times in a year: One in June and another in December. It is to be noted that third category result of NET will be valid for one year only. It means he/ she will have to qualify again next year if he/she does not get admission for PhD.
